What exactly is a dog park?

A dog park is any fenced-in area where owners may safely allow their dogs to exercise off-leash, play and socialize with other dogs. They often include agility courses, fountains, and other amenities that make the park enjoyable for dogs and their owners.

 

Where will the dog park be located?

Luckily the dog park has already been approved by the county board, and the land provided at the Graham County Fairgrounds. Once completed, the dog park will be a part of the fairgrounds and maintained as a county park.  



There will be no tax increase for Graham County residents due to the park, even though it will be a county park, and maintained by the fairgrounds. The maintenance and labor is already covered in the allotted budget for the fairgrounds.

When will the park be built? 

The Dog Park grand opening was April 18 2015. We are still working hard to raise funds to add amenities such as shade, landscaping and obstacles. A dog park has been approved for a few years, but due to the lack of funding was never constructed. This is why in 2013 Gila Valley Dog Lovers decided to take on the project and really push to get the park built. The county does not have money in the budget currently to create the dog park, therefore funding will have to be provided by the community through donations and sponsorships.  Rest assured we are a committed group and will keep at this until the park is completed!

 

I've heard dog parks are dangerous, is that true? 

As with any public place there are risks when you visit. Rules will be posted at the park for safety and anyone not following them will be required to leave. All dogs should be vaccinated to keep them healthy and avoid any health issues they may be exposed to by other dogs.
